Title: The Man Who Painted the Dragon Griaule (1984) Author: Lucius Shepard Source: The Dragon Griaule by Lucius Shepard (Fantasy Masterworks)

One Word Review: Unexpected.

One Line Review: A man presents a plan to paint the 6000ft x 750ft dragon, called Griaule, in order to kill him and surprising allowed to do so but we’re presented with a slice of the painter’s life as he has his own troubles which may, or may not, be influenced by the creature’s presence.

One Paragraph Review: We are presented with a view of an almost unimaginable immobile beast via a huge and wondrous what if? Its present state is caused through a magician’s spell and is one he has yet to wake up from but despite this humanity have colonised him and grown to live around him. The dragon’s influence seems to hold them  there. And I’ll be honest and say I wasn’t expecting this when I heard about this series of stories. And I didn’t expect that we’d have a story of affairs, and unrequited love but that’s what I got. Surprising in all kinds of good ways. I am though curious about what happens next as the ending seems like an ending rather than an opening.
